Mathematics (Grades 7-9)
A course for each grade, 7, 8 & 9, following the Standard High School curriculum set out by the Ministry of
Education, used in High Schools across Jamaica. The Course is segmented by terms, and topics
corresponding to the National Curriculum. High Schools often have discretion in taking slightly different paths,
but ultimately all the same topics are covered.
Note: This course may not be suitable for students who have yet to grasp primary-level education and are on the APSE pathway.
CSEC Mathematics General
Ideal for Students in Grades 10, and 11 or adults resisting cxc math. Mastery of this course prepares students to ace CSEC/CXC mathematics and ensures a solid foundation for all future academic studies, whether science and engineering, business and economics, law or medicine, history and psychology or any other university course of
study.
CSEC Additional Mathematics
Ideal for Students in Grades 10, and 11 or university students taking courses in Statistics or College Math.
Mastery of this course prepares students to ace CSEC/CXC Additional Mathematics and ensures a strong foundation for more advanced mathematical studies such as Pure Mathematics at 6th form, or even advanced statistics, college math, calculus and even other university courses which are not mathematical in nature but have computational
components.
CAPE Pure Mathematics Unit 1
Ideal for Students in Grade 12 interested in studying Actuarial Science, Engineering, Medicine, Physical Science, Computer Science, Architecture and other related technical areas. This is the beginning of ‘real mathematics’ where many students who thought they were good at math find the gauntlet thrown down. Mastery of this course prepares students to ace CAPE Pure Mathematics Unit 1 and ensures a strong foundation for technical areas of study requiring a lot of abstract and creative thinking and critical reasoning. Here students are introduced to calculus and mathematical proofs.
CAPE Pure Mathematics Unit 2
Like its unit 1 counterpart; Ideal for Students in Grade 13 interested in studying Actuarial Science, Engineering, Medicine, Physical Science, Computer Science, Architecture and other related technical areas. Mastery of this course prepares students to ace CAPE Pure Mathematics Unit 2 and builds upon the foundation laid, focusing more on applying the knowledge gained in Unit 1. While still fundamentally abstract in nature, more emphasis is placed on areas of application to real-world problems.
CAPE Integrated Mathematics
Ideal for Students in Grades 12 and 13 or university students taking courses in Statistics or College Math.
Mastery of this course prepares students to ace CAPE Integrated Mathematics and builds the necessary mathematical foundation for students not taking courses of study that are not very mathematical in nature but still have computational elements. Borrowing topics from both units of CAPE Pure Mathematics but less mathematically intense, the focus is more on applications. This would be of great benefit to students intending to study courses such as business, economics, marketing, nursing, psychology, etc.
